The Big Picture
Part of Clover’s vision is to deliver trusted products and sustainable shareholder value by being a responsible corporate citizen and preferred employer.
As part of achieving this vision, Clover recognises its responsibility to reduce, and as far as practicable, to eliminate the impacts of its business on the environment. This responsibility relates not only to operations within Clover's control, but also to Clover's supply chain partners, which are recognised to be responsible for significant environmental impacts in supplying Clover.
In realisation of this responsibility,
Clover is committed to the following:
- Implementing and maintaining an effective Environmental Management System to provide a structured framework for continual improvement of our environmental performance.
- Quantification of the carbon footprint associated with our operations and key elements of our supply chain, and the setting of annual targets for reducing Clover's overall climate impact.
- Monitoring water usage across our operations, and setting of targets for reducing water consumption.
- Implementation of programmes to minimise the generation of solid and liquid wastes and the impacts of their disposal.
- Implementation of programmes to minimise returns and damages, and the impacts thereof on the environment.
- Monitoring energy usage across our operations and setting of targets for reducing energy consumption and associated emissions.
- Implementation of procedures for managing the impacts of on-site storage of fuels and chemicals, both during normal operation and in the event of spills and emergencies.
- Optimising the use of primary and secondary packaging.
- Adherence to all applicable environmental legislation.
- Ongoing support and development of its Best Farming Practices (BFP) Programme, to ensure continual monitoring of, and reduction in, the impacts associated with milk supply.
- Engagement with partners in its supply chain, as well as with customers, to inform them of our activities in reducing environmental impacts and partner with them in reducing their own impacts.
- Making all staff aware of this policy, and equipping them with the skills to achieve the requirements of this policy and of the EMS more broadly.
We are committed to reviewing this environmental policy annually, as well as reviewing targets and progress towards achieving its environmental objectives.
Making A Difference
In a world of limited resources, Clover believes in reducing resource use intensity on a continuous basis. Reducing our impact on the environment enables us to produce more using less of the world’s limited resources.
To achieve a sustained environmental performance improvement, Clover believes in an integrated approach, where improved environmental performance is embedded as a part of the normal internal processes of the company.
Examples of this are the following:
- Setting improvement targets for every level of the business, including the lowest level teams, with daily measurement.
- Aligning environmental improvement with the performance management system.
- Aligning our Capital Expenditure with our resource use reduction targets so that reduced resource use are achieved whenever possible and financially feasible.
- External yearly audits of the environmental management system.

Planning For The Future
At Clover, we’ve set ourselves reduction targets in order to both reduce the environmental, as well as the financial impact, of rising resource cost and the need to continue to be a sustainable business in all aspects.
With this in mind, strategies were identified in order to significantly reduce our consumption over the medium term of the following: Water consumption Electricity consumption Coal consumption Improvement of effluent quality Reducing waste to landfill As part of the risk control process within the group, possible supply constraints or interruption scenarios are analysed on a regular basis, and contingency plans made in respect thereof.
Clover Research
Milk producers are facing daunting challenges – not only are they expected to produce high quality and safe products at affordable prices, but they also are expected to do so under conditions of rising production costs and increasingly scarce natural resources and climate change. Growing awareness of unintended impacts associated with some dairy production practices has led to heightened societal expectations for improved environmental, community, labour and animal welfare standards in the South African dairy sector. The aim of this model is to support the Clover milk producers to meet these expectations.
Moving towards sustainable dairy farming evolves the whole process that moves farming systems along a trajectory toward meeting various socially determined goals as opposed to achieving any particular end state. Therefore the Clover Sustainability Dairy Model includes the integration of the most recent drivers in terms of the worldwide move towards sustainable dairy farming.
Globally, this is still a developing area of business and Clover will learn and grow with the rest of the world, as sustainable dairy farming grows into maturity. The Model will focus on meeting goals such as quality and safety of raw milk, environmental management, carbon footprint, GHG emissions and emission reduction schemes.
The required records, registers and archives will form an integral part of the focus areas as this will no longer be in hard copy format, but in electronic format. This will not only make the model more environmentally friendly, but will give milk producers the opportunity to investigate different options. The model will allow quantification of effects of management practices and mitigation options for GHG emissions for different farming systems.
The preliminary focus areas for the Clover Sustainable Dairy Model (CSDM) are as follows:
- Herd management, including the management of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions.
- Animal feed and pasture and soil management, including GHG emissions and retention.
- Water management and treatment.
- Animal medication and agricultural chemicals.
- Dairy parlour and equipment (including infrastructure, hygiene and safety).
- Milk composition and quality.
- Environmental management, manure handling and bio-diversity, including GHG emissions and the reduction thereof.
- Energy management and utilisation of alternative energy resources for the reduction of GHG emissions.
- Bio-security, with the main focus on disease control.
- Personnel and people.
Impact and Strategy
Clover’s green initiative started in the prior financial year with the aim of establishing a formal environmental sustainability (“green”) strategy. As part of achieving this vision, Clover recognises its responsibility to reduce, and as far as practicable, to eliminate the impacts of its business on the environment. This responsibility relates not only to operations within Clover’s control, but also to Clover’s supply chain partners, which are recognised to be responsible for significant environmental impacts in supplying Clover.
In realisation of this responsibility, Clover is committed to the following objectives and outcomes:
OBJECTIVE | OUTCOME | |
Continuously improve on environmental performance | Implement and maintain an effective Environmental Management System (EMS) Provide a structured framework for continual improvement | |

Clover is committed to reviewing this environmental policy annually, as well as reviewing targets and progress towards achieving its environmental objectives. To enhance environmental awareness among staff, a Clover Green section was introduced as a regular feature in the bi-monthly staff newspaper (In Clover), containing news on Clover’s green initiatives, staff involvement and clean-up challenges across the Group and providing green tips.
