Recyclable waste should be separated as near to source (preferably home) as possible. This limits the costs of labour and machinery associated with sorting after collection and will prevent recyclables, like paper, being soiled by wastes such as food. Once paper or cardboard is soiled, it cannot be recycled. Other items, if soiled, will have to be cleaned before being recycled.
